NMD and IIM 2009 Awards galore at RDCIS

National Metallurgists Day (NMD) is celebrated every year by the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) and Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India. During this occasion, eminent scientists and engineers are honoured for their contributions in metallurgy & material science.
This year the NMD celebrations were held in Kolkata on 14-16th November, 2009 where national level awards were presented.
RDCIS is the corporate unit of SAIL which undertakes R&D projects in diverse realms of iron & steel technology for the steel plants of SAIL. These projects are directed towards cost reduction, quality improvement and value addition to steel products. RDCIS has developed various steel products for Defence which otherwise were imported. This Centre has developed high strength rails, which are required by Indian Railways for heavier axle load & higher vehicle speed. We have been providing technological support to SAIL steel plants in assimilation of new technologies.. This Centre has been providing its technological expertise and competence to other Public and Private Sector steel and affiliated industry.
In 2009, the large numbers of RDCIS Scientists and engineers have received awards in different categories. These are –
Shri N.K. Jha, Executive Director (Works), Bokaro Steel Plant and Ex-ED Incharge, RDCIS, SAIL has been conferred with “Steel Eighties Award” for the year 2009 at the NMD Conference 2009, at Kolkata. This award has been given for excellence in contributions in R&D advancement of metallurgy of steel technology in particular, over a period of times.
Shri T.S.Reddy, Assistant General Manager, RDCIS has been awarded the 2009 Metallurgists of the year Award for his significant contribution towards energy conservation and improvement in furnace productivity in SAIL plants in general and sinter plants in particular, optimization of burner design, and reduction in Green House Gas emission.
Shri I.N.P.Gupta, Assistant General Manager and Smt. Archana Sharan, Sr.Manger have jointly bagged the MECON Award for their outstanding contributions in the area of design , development and implementation of innovative solutions to improve the performance of various units of SAIL. The benefit accrued include improvement in product quality and productivity, reduction in energy consumption and GHG emissions, reduction in downtime and improved operation practices. They contributed immensely in conceptualizing and implementing state-of-art technology and improving by innovative ideas in Rail & Structural Mill, Wire Rod Mill and Merchant Mill of Bhilai Steel Plant, Steel Melting Shop-I and Continuous Annealing Line of Bokaro Steel Plant and Continuous Casting Shop of Durgapur Steel Plant.
Dr.S.K.Dhua,AGM, Shri C.B.Sharma, and Dr.B.D.Tripathy have won 2nd prize and Dr.S.K. Dhua, Shri John Guria, Shri U.N.Jha, Shri P.P.Sarkar and Mr.B.D.Tripathy have won 3rd prize in Scanning Microscopy Category of Metelography Competition
Shri Sanjay Kumar Gupta, AM have won 2nd prize in Oral presentation on his essay “ Hit Processing with high Phosphorous in Twin Hearth Furnace” and Shri P K Roy Choudhury, DGM has won 1st prize in Poster presentation. The Poster on Improvement in Lining Life of Steel Ladle with in house bricks at SMS-2 at Rourkela Steel Plant.
All the above awards have been presented on 14th November, 2009 in Kolkata at NMD and IIM Award ceremony.
